History

-in alliance with Burma, goes to war with Siam (1833-9)

-huge, massive war that goes on with Siam badly shaken though it's not to Ayutthaya degree

-sees Vietnam fully occupy Cambodia and turn Lao areas into a protectorate

-long-term, Khmer areas successfully colonized and Vietnamized

-due to the sheer population disparities involved colonization can be done like that

-after Burma got fucked due to British Wars > Second Anglo-Burmese War (1847-9) Siam rises

-with Yunnan getting powerful and blocking Siamese attempts to occupy parts of Burma it is blocked

-and so it instead looks to Vietnam in war (1854-9) where it fails to occupy Khmer parts and it's sort of a draw

-however, Vietnam's hold over Lao kingdoms greatly weakened by this war

-Spanish Catholic missionaries getting killed by Vietnamese government and in 1863 it causes war

-ends in 1867 with Spain getting control of Cochinchina ports

-with this humiliating defeat Vietnam engages in period of modernization

-to do better against such wars

-period of ambitious railway construction in broad alliance with France against the Spanish

-in 1886 Vietnam gets Cochinchina back

-after France intervenes to make independence of Philippine Republic

-in 1890s Vietnam pushes through ambitious campaign of modernization

-in 1921 Heads of China > 1901-1926 Lee Cheng-chang (Tsuyu-Tungi-Tang) † funds a coup attempt in Vietnam

-fails and there's a colossal backlash

-eventually movement gets increasingly influential

-with China's Wars > Renwu Revolution (1941-3) kicks off in revolution
